Lens replacement questions, answered
What is refractive lens exchange — and is it the same as custom lens replacement?
Yes — refractive lens exchange (RLE), custom lens replacement, and clear lens exchange (CLE) are the same procedure. Your eye’s natural lens — the one that stopped flexing in your 40s and made reading harder — is replaced with a clear advanced lens matched to your prescription and goals. It’s the same operation as modern cataract surgery, done before a cataract forms. Because the natural lens is replaced, you’ll never develop a cataract.
What lens options do you offer?
The lens you choose sets your range of vision. Depending on your goals, that means a multifocal lens (Bausch + Lomb Envy™, TECNIS Odyssey™) for the widest everyday range, an extended-depth-of-focus (EDOF) lens (TECNIS PureSee™) for smooth range with a low-glare profile, or the Light Adjustable Lens, which we fine-tune after surgery with light treatments. Refractive lens exchange vs. LASIK — which is right for me?
LASIK reshapes the cornea — excellent for distance vision in younger eyes, but it can’t stop the aging of the lens behind it, which is what takes away your reading vision after 45. Lens exchange corrects the problem at its source. As a rule of thumb: under 45, LASIK or the EVO ICL often fits better; from your late 40s on — especially once you depend on readers or progressives — lens exchange is usually the answer that lasts. Your evaluation settles it for your eyes.
Will I still need glasses?
With an advanced multifocal or EDOF lens, most patients become far less dependent on glasses across distance, the dashboard, and everyday reading. For the very smallest print in dim light, you may still want light readers. Your consult will set realistic expectations for your eyes and your lens choice.
How much does refractive lens exchange cost?
At Clear Vision, refractive lens exchange generally runs $12,000–$14,000 for both eyes, depending on the lens technology that fits your goals — confirmed at your evaluation. Many patients use HSA/FSA funds and 0% APR financing for 24 months for qualified borrowers, with additional options available by phone.
Does insurance cover it?
No — refractive lens exchange is an elective vision-correction procedure, so it’s private-pay. One important exception: if a cataract has already started forming, the same lens upgrade happens through cataract surgery, where insurance covers removing the cataract and your out-of-pocket is often lower. That’s one more reason the comprehensive evaluation comes first — it tells us which path you’re actually on.
What if my vision isn’t right after surgery?
About 3% of our patients benefit from a follow-up enhancement. With any advanced-lens or astigmatism-correction package, that enhancement is included at no extra cost. We’ll explain exactly what your package covers before you decide anything.
